First you need to remember how to work out the area of a rectangle. It is

      Area = Length x Width

Finding the Area of Complex Shapes

If we wanted to find the area of a shape like this

               it would be quite difficult because we don't have a rule or formula for it.

We need to split the shape up into rectangles that we can work out the area of. There are many ways of splitting the shape up. Below is one example.

We have split the shape up into four rectangles A, B, C and D. We could now work out the area of each and add them together.
