Example 1

Below is the plan of a building that we want to find the area of.

First we need to split it into rectangles. There are two ways of doing this. Below is one of them.

We now have two rectangles A and B. We can work out the area of each by multiplying the length by the width in each case.

Make sure that you understand why we have chosen 10 x 6 for rectangle A and 18 x 10 for rectangle B.

Now that we know the areas of each of the rectangles we can add them together.

60 + 180 = 240 unitsē

NOTE - In this case we did not know what the units were measured in, so we have just put 'units squared.' Normally you would know and it is important to write the units down.
