Example 2

Below is the plan of some carpet that we want to find the area of. The measurements are in cm.

First we need to split it into rectangles. Below is one way.

We now have three rectangles A, B and C. We can work out the area of each by multiplying the length by the width in each case.

Make sure that you understand why we have chosen 100 x 300 for rectangle C.

Now that we know the areas of each of the rectangles we can add them together.

A    +      B    +    C    =    Area of Carpet

5625 + 22500 + 30000   = 58125 cm²
