Converting Decimals to Percentages - Tutorial 1

There are two easy ways of converting a decimal into a percentage. The first is simply to multiply by 100, the second involves moving the decimal point.

Method 1 - Multiplying by 100

This method is very easy. Simply multiply the decimal by 100 and that gives you the equivalent percentage.

E.g.

Decimal Working Percentage Summary
  0.5   x 100   =50 %   0.5 = 50%
  0.25   x 100   =25 %   0.25 = 25%
  0.18   x 100   =18%   0.18 = 18%
  0.3457   x 100   =34.57%   0.3457 = 34.57%
  1   x 100   =100%   1 = 100%

Method 2 - Moving the decimal point

This method is actually the same as method 1, but is very easy to do without a calculator. Look at the last column in the table above. You may notice that the decimal number is very similar to the percentage in each case. All that has happened is that the decimal point has moved two places to the right ->.

Now test yourself by doing the following assessment. Try to get at least 80% correct. Try this test again in a few days time to make sure that you have remembered how to do it.
