Mean - Tutorial 1

We use the mean to work out the 'average' of a set of numbers.

To find the mean:

add up all of the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers

E.g. 1

If we wanted to find the mean price of a CD across five shops.

The data:

HMV £13.99
Our Price £12.99
Virgin £12.49
Asda £10.99
WHSmith £14.99

1. First we add up the numbers.

13.99 + 12.99 + 12.49 + 10.99 + 14.99 = 65.45

2. Then we divide by the number of numbers, in this case there were 5 numbers.

65.45 ÷ 5 = 13.09

So the mean price for a CD across five shops was £13.09.

E.g. 2

If we wanted to find the mean exam score of students.

The data:

John 85
Sarah 91
Tim 75
Hasim 89
Jody 86
Graham 95
Tara 99
Wesley 87

1. First we add up the numbers.

85 + 91 + 75 + 89 + 86 + 95 + 99 + 87 = 707

2. Then we divide by the number of numbers, in this case 8 exam results.

707 + 8 = 88.375

This rounds to 88
