Pie Charts - Tutorial 2

Example 2

Watch the animation below to learn about another basic pie chart.

CrispsPieAnimation.gif (32422 bytes)

These pie charts so far have been split into easy to recognise sections, like ½ or ¼. The diagrams below show these.

2SegPie.gif (2903 bytes) This pie chart is split into two halfs.
4SegPie.gif (3146 bytes) This pie chart is split into 4 quarters.
8SegPie.gif (7189 bytes) This pie chart is split into 8 eighths.

Remember pie charts show proportions. So you need to know the total amount and also the size of the fraction for each segment.

Music Sales Example

Look at the diagram of music format sales.

MusicEg1.gif (5218 bytes)

This pie chart shows the proportion of sales for the different music formats.

CDs account for half of the total sales.
Tapes account for a quarter of the total sales.
Records and Mini Discs account for one eighth each.

NOTE the pie chart does not actually tell us how many were actually sold, only the proportions.

This table shows us what would happen if different total amounts were sold.

Total Sales CDs
(Half)
Tapes
(Quarter)
Mini Discs
(Eighth)
Records
(Eighth)
800 400 200 100 100
1000 500 250 125 125
8000 4000 2000 1000 1000
1,000,000 500,000 250,000 125,000 125,000
40,000,000 20,000,000 10,000,000 5,000,000 5,000,000

So, for example, to find the exact amount of tapes sold you would need to know the total sales and then find a quarter of that.
