Rusty pieces of metal too.
The gate is stuck because of the rusty lock on it.
The alleyway's leading you to another dimension.
The gate gets taller so no-one can climb back over to our world
The point of the story is that they are trying to get people to live in the new dimension so there'll be nothing left in the world.
