Acklington C of E First School

What our tapestry is about :
My Family and Communication

1.  We began by looking at communication in Acklington village, sketching our ideas.  Four main areas were selected: school, the post office, telephone box and a computer
Communication in these areas occurred at different levels :
School - learning and friendship
Post Office - letters to friends in the U.K. and around the World
Telephone Box - calls to friends in the U.K. and around the World
Computer - learning and communication in the U.K. and around the World
The centre of the design therefore needed to be a map of the World surrounded by its different peoples

2.  My family is represented as being :
The family where I live
My school family
My World family
My church family

How we made our tapestry :

  • We began by visiting Woodhorn Colliery Museum to learn the technique of rug making.
  • We learnt how to crochet, knit, plait and weave in school.  Knitting and crocheting work was completed at home with the assistance of mums ( some mums came into school to ' brush up' their skills !
  • Four families agreed to complete the embroidery.
  • One mum mounted individual pieces of work on the canvas.
  • All members of staff wove a line in the first blue plastic area
  • All children , 4 - 9 years, completed the second plastic area

The tapestry took about four months to complete.  Whole school involvement was wonderful, new skills learnt and a positive focus given in school after the 'horrors' of a proposed school closure threat.
