Felton First School

What our tapestry is about :
Felton First School's design brief was to incorporate the themes of 'Global Issues' and 'The Food We Eat'.
The children decided to have a brain-storming session about food and the type of foodstuffs that are caught, grown or produced around their school.
It was decided that the school was to be at the centre of the tapestry and radiating from it were the themes of fishing, animal farming, arable farming and locally produced foods such as strawberries and honey.  It was all brought together with the food the children liked to eat which came from other parts of the globe - such as spaghetti, pizza and curry !

How we made our tapestry :
Each class in school had a section of the tapestry to work on.  They produced their ideas on paper with the younger children drawing pictures of colourful fish to the older ones choosing the types of materials they might like to use.
The children - with help from their grandmas and their mums - began work mid- April.
It began slowly, but gradually it started to develop and the creation began to emerge.  It seemed the children were all making fish, bees and fluffy animals for ever !
Two or three times a week the children stitched, embroidered and knitted until every child had worked on the tapestry at least once.  Finally in later May it was finished - hurrah!
The tapestry was displayed in the school hall before it went on tour, this enabled the children to see their hard work finally completed and to know they had ALL created a wonderful tapestry.
