What our tapestry is about :
Our theme was 'Festivals' and 'Where we Live'.  The local Salmon Queen Festival was chosen as the main focus for the tapestry as we felt it was unique and represented an industry which had historical significance in the town.  The River Tweed is famous for its rich production of salmon and wince the 12th century has provided a livelihood for many local families.

The festival is an annual event which celebrates the success of the netting season.  A local girl is chosen as Queen and, accompanied by her attendants , is crowned and paraded through the streets of the town before celebrating at a fine salmon supper.

How we made our Tapestry:
The children of Class 5 (years 3 & 4).  Were responsible for the project.

Following a brainstorming session, we planned the tapestry on paper and several ideas were considered before finally choosing the most workable suggestions.  We agreed that the town of Berwick Upon Tweed should be a strong backdrop--hence the bridge and variety of buildings.  Our aims were:

  • To use as many different techniques as possible
  • To ensure that every child should have the opportunity to work on the tapestry.

We achieved our aims and the final result reflected a super effort by the whole class.  Many children spent playtimes and lunchtimes cutting, weaving, knitting and proggy--matting the canvas,  There were many frustrating moments but these were quickly forgotten when we saw our work at the  in Alnwick Castle.

We were proud to be part of such a super display.
