The Grove Special School

What our tapestry is about :
''Work' and 'Where I live' were our themes.  This was ideal as we live in the historic and tourist town of Berwick upon Tweed.  The children were keen to have the Town Hall central to the tapestry. The countryside, the River Tweed and the coast are all shown along with the two main local industries of fishing and farming. Berwick Rangers football club is also shown through the use of the team's gold and black colours and the hand made football.

How we made our Tapestry:
Class three pupils planned their work on paper using drawings and paint.  They also planned where the actual finished items should go and were involved with the discussion on texture, colour, shape, form, fabric and woollen threads to be used.
Each pupil was involved with directly sewing the background material be it a few stitches or a few lines using a variety of materials and fabrics.  The pupils used kapok type stuffing or pieces of sponge to create 3D effect on the hills, fields and football colours.  Class 1 & 2 pupils integrated with class 3 on an individual and paired basis as they made their contribution to the tapestry.  Part of The Grove School's role in the area is to run an inverse integration programme with other schools.  Any pupils who attend from these other schools were also given a chance to contribute to the school's tapestry.  Making stump faces proved to be a very popular activity and since the project we have made many more to sell as brooches.  A wide range of techniques were used including sewing using fabric, wool and thread, knitting, French knitting, weaving, peg weaving, rug making, crocheting woollen flowers, stump people, fabric painting and embroidery.  The completed tapestry is a 'work of art' which we are extremely proud of.
