Wansbeck St Aidans First School

What our tapestry is about :
Our tapestry was about 'Our School' and 'Locality'.  Food and work were our themes and ideas came from children throughout the school at the design stage.  During discussions about work and food, farming and working 'in Morpeth' were favourite suggestions from the children.  Also the children wanted to include images of their school, and suggested we use the Celtic cross that is in the main hall.  We talked at length about the types of shops there are in Morpeth and included a fruit and vegetable stall, a fish shop and a 'Miss Smaile type shop'!

How we made our Tapestry:
The whole school took part in the project right from the design stage.  Key Stage Two children (Years 3 & 4 ) did the bulk of the work on the canvas itself, but other children all made some contribution to the finished tapestry.  The pre-school group made a lovely job of wrapping wool around cards to make the stones for the clock tower.
Year 1 and 2 children made clouds, sheep and the clock face.

We had a great deal of support from parents and helpers who came into school every afternoon over a half term and worked on the canvas with small groups of Year 3/4 children.  These children did all the longstitch, cross stitch and proggy work.  We were delighted with the finished tapestry.
