ADAPTING THE RESOURCES

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Teachers wishing to concentrate on the literacy aspects of the activities might find it useful to collect some examples of historical fiction and examples of how historians can use empathy in their writing to create a 'feel' for their chosen period.
For teachers wishing to develop more complex ICT tasks, we have included two databases of census data from 1861 to 1891 which could be investigated to produce lists e.g. of occupations, or comparative information e.g. on average size of family.
We have included some graphics such a newspaper masthead and copies of early 20th century adverts which pupils could load into MS Word to present their work in the form of a newspaper.

At KS2 pupils might use the photograph of the street and ask the question 'What happened next?' as the starting point for a story.
They could use the 'Then and Now' activity to compare the street in 1900 with what it looks like now.

The Word document 'My Characters' could be adapted to make a labelled diagram of the words used for articles of clothing in Victorian times e.g. 'pinafore' or 'hob nailed boots' etc.
KS3 pupils might like to use parts of the units as exercises for historical enquiry activities to examine and evaluate the information obtained from such sources as photographs, maps and census returns.
The support materials have been created in Microsoft Word format to enable you to modify them to suit your pupils and to enable them to create their own documents. The 'My Characters' document could be modified to create a story board, for instance.
More advanced students might try using the resources to write using different genres, e.g. plays, film scripts, diaries or news paper articles.

ABOUT THIS UNIT
The web site activities have been designed as a unit but you may wish to use each activity separately. The intention was to produce resources which pupils could use to collect a variety of source materials to help them write a story set in a street in Alnwick in 1900. Through using the resources pupils can become familiar with the layout of the street, know which shops they would find there and discover who lived there. They will also use observational skills to collect details about the street to help them imagine what it would be like to walk down the street in 1900. Finally they can use information from the 1891 census to choose characters for their story and give them names of people who actually lived in the street.
