Christmas Designs
To learn how to use the Dazzle painting program, you're first going to draw and decorate a simple Christmas tree, then have a go at making your own Christmas design.....

1. Open the Dazzle program by clicking on the shortcut on the desktop. If the colour palette is covering part of your page, you can move it by clicking on the blue bar at the top, keeping your mouse button held down and dragging it out of the way.

2. Now click on the symmetry tool

Your page will be divided into 4 with the lines of symmetry marked in red. To draw your Christmas tree, you'll only need two way symmetry, so click your right mouse button over the symmetry icon and this box should pop up.

Untick the Left/Right box and click OK.

3. Now select the pencil tool and draw your tree. treeoutline.gif (1260 bytes)

If you make a mistake, use the Undo button.

What do you notice about the way this tool works?
Can you work out another way to erase mistakes?

4. Once your tree is drawn, select a shade of green and click the Fill tool over your tree.

If your whole page floods with green, you need to find and repair the gaps in your tree outline.

5. Now turn off symmetry by clicking again on the icon. The red lines should disappear.

6. Click your right mouse button over the rectangle tool and click in the box to select filled shapes.

Click on Close. Pick a suitable shade from the colour palette and draw the tree trunk.

7. Now decorate your tree using the star and circle shapes.
Can you work out how to make different shaped stars?
How can you have different outline and fill colours?
8. Add a star to the top of the tree. Spray on some snow using the Spray gun.
9. Use the Text tool to add a Christmas greeting.

Try changing the font style, colour and size. (Click the right mouse button to do this)
Can you edit text once it's on your page?

Turning pictures into stamps

10. Click on the select tool   and drag out a box around your tree.

11. Now click on Area on the top menu bar and select Stamp.

12. Open up the stamp set by clicking on the smaller stamp icon on the toolbar.

If you scroll down past the three house stamps, your new stamp should be at the end.

13. Click on the new page icon at the top left of your menu bar to get a new screen.
Click on your stamp and place it on the page.
Have a go at making a repeating pattern with your stamp.

14. Use the select tool to pick out a small area of your pattern, then click on Area on the top menu bar and pick Tile from the list of choices. What do you think Tile and Flip does? Try it!

15. To save your stamp, click on Stamps on the Stamp toolbar and select Save from the drop down menu. You could save your stamp in a 'mystamps' folder within Dazzle, or you could save it onto floppy disk. To reuse your stamp next time, click on Load on the Stamps menu. Have fun!
